Haven’t some of your best plans been written on a napkin??
Why is that? I think it’s because they are so straightforward and simple! Have you ever had a big project to do and you just didn’t know where to start? Or maybe you got yourself going and then got stuck – you just didn’t know what your next steps should be? I’ve certainly been there! There are lots of times, too, when I have what feels like a plan, but I haven’t written it down – it’s all in my head – and I end up running around putting out grass fires and get distracted from my main purpose. That wastes a lot of valuable time!
One of the big differences I see between people winging their way in business, learning by trial and error, and those with business acumen is PLANNING. My dentist clients go to great lengths to create detailed treatment plans for their patients so that nothing gets missed, timelines are kept and the end results are optimum. Yet when it comes to their businesses, planning often doesn’t occur to them!
When I decided to make the scary transition from employee with a regular paycheque to consultant, I knew I needed a plan! I sat down with a crisp package of lined paper (PC – pre-computer!) brewed a fresh pot of coffee and began to write. As a business school graduate, I knew a thing or two about writing business plans!! I wrote and I wrote and I wrote. On page 16 I was about half way through and that’s when it then it hit me! I suddenly stopped, pen poised above the paper……Who was I kidding? Who was I trying to impress? This plan wasn’t for a banker or an investor – this plan was for me and I wasn’t going to use a plan this long and cumbersome. It was likely going to live out its days in the bottom drawer of a filing cabinet just like most business plans!
That was the day that Paper Napkin Plans was born and I have been using it ever since. I got down to the nitty gritty of planning and crated a plan with 6 questions that must be answered honestly, clearly and comprehensively.
