My Story:
I have been working with dentists for 35 years – as Office Manager, Business Manager, Accountant, Consultant, and now Coach and mentor. I actually grew up in a dental family – my grandfather, Dr. Benjamin E. Nickells, was a dentist in Victoria, BC Canada from the Roaring 20’s to the Nifty 60’s. I remember his practice well – even the smell of it. I also remember hearing the talk around the dining room table about how Grampa struggled as a business owner.
For many years, as a dental consultant, I provided dentists with business services ranging from office management, human resources to crunching numbers – all the things dentists seem to hate to do. I founded my business and my livelihood on offloading all the work that dentists seemed reticent to take on and were happy to abdicate.
But something wasn’t right. I thought I was helping dentists, but was I really? The more I offloaded from their plate, the less knowledge they gained about their business. I kept thinking about that old Chinese proverb, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. Was I really doing my clients a favour?
That is when I discovered the Executive Coaching graduate program at Royal Roads University and it was an epiphany for me. Coaching is all about sustainable growth and tapping into the considerable knowledge and ability of people to create their own solutions. It is based on the philosophy that people are creative, resourceful and whole (not broken) and sometimes just need a thinking partner than asks the right questions rather than provides the answers.
After years of watching dentists learn by trial and error, abdicate (rather than delegate) and become overwhelmed with the challenge of owning a business and being a boss, my focus is all about fostering growth, resonating with my clients by building deeper relationships with them, and providing sustainable learning and ability. I still offer some of the administrative services, however it is always partnered with coaching so that my clients have a solid foundation, support and skill set that they can tap into throughout their entire professional careers.
